Making changes in our life can be difficult. Thoughts and questions fill our minds.
“I probably won’t follow through.”
“Here goes nothing.”
“This is just a phase, things will go back to the same old thing, just like they always do.”
“How do I even start?”
“I already failed, maybe I should just give up now?”
“Why can’t I stick with anything?”
The real battle for change is won or lost in the mind. You see, to truly make changes in our life we have to first change the way we think. We have to change the way we look at things. For example, to make a lifestyle change towards health and fitness, you must first change the way you think about health. It’s not just about what you eat, it’s about being active, your energy levels, and how you feel in your own skin.
Another obstacle we must overcome when striving for change, is how we define our success. What is a win for you? Is it accomplishing change? Because in my experience the life change and plans you write out on paper rarely play out the way you think they will. I would recommend you define your success as progress. You don’t have to win the game to exhibit progress; you just have to do better than you did the last time. It’s about the baby steps.
Those thoughts and questions that fill your mind, telling you about every time you have tried in the past and failed, will be silenced when you focus on the baby steps. Make progress the new success in your life. Sure you may fail. You may not follow through with the changes that you set out to make. But taking a few more steps than you were able to take before your last fail, is success. Because with enough baby steps and enough attempts, you will arrive at your ultimate success. Change- change for the better.
Don’t focus on the Goliath-size steps still in front of you, just focus on the baby steps. Small progress made consistently lasts far longer than the One-Step Wonders when chasing after the life you desire.
